EVERETT, Wa. For the second consecutive week, the Seattle Spartans (0-2) women's football team makes the long drive to Oregon in search of their first win of the season. Saturday's game in Cottage Grove against the Oregon Cougars (0-2) features a battle of winless squads. Last week, Oregon lost 7-0 to Portland, while Seattle lost 20-8 to Capital City. Seattle's offense, ranked fifth in the Women's Football Alliance's Division II, showcases halfback Ashley Gearardo. Against Capital City, she tallied 77 rushing yards, added a 15-yard touchdown catch, and had two tackles on defense. Gearardo is second in Division II rushing with 180 yards. Spartans quarterback Lashundea Wansley (21-26-74) has an 80 percent completion rate, by far tops in Division II. Last week, she connected with Gearardo for a 15-yard touchdown, while receiver Ciara Jay had a 3-yard catch. Spartans linebacker Phaedra Keaton racked up five tackles last week and added an assist, linewomen Yollymar Delgado added four solo tackles, five assists and a sack, and linewoman Charity Reed had four tackles. Defensive back Rachel Killstrom and linebacker Nicole Pelham each had three tackles, while defensive backs Suellen Siqueira-Fisher, London Hester-Williams and Emily Ketzenberg each had two tackles. Pelham was 6-31 playing halfback last week. Seattle will try to blunt Oregon's ground game, which tops the Developmental Division with 465 total yards and 375 yards rushing. Oregon's fortunes depend on quarterback Macie Reinen, ranked second (7-17-90, two touchdowns) in passing, and first (31-152, one touchdown) in rushing. Halfback Anastazia Brandi (10-63) is ranked fourth in the division. The Cougars No. 3 defense is led by defensive end Sarah Hescock, who has 18 solo tackles, 10 assists, and four sacks. Defensive back Becky Lubhan adds four sacks.
